Brazilian Softened Portuguese
is a curious language. Sometimes there are words that definitely
do not have any kind of correspondence with other words in
foreign languages but we can
try to explain the meaning though. To feel saudades
(with an "s" at the end) or to have saudade, since
saudades/saudade are not a verbs but substantives, would mean
to miss something or someone, to feel nostalgia about someone, a
place, a certain time or an event. So, this is the name of this
beach...Saudade Beach.
As the name may suggest,
it is a beautiful bucolic place, located at the foot of
the Sapucaitava Hill. Originally, the beach was very
big, stretching from the place where it is today,
contouring the Sapucaitava Hill and ending near the
surroundings of the Piragüira Hill, actually where the
Emídio de Souza Street is located nowadays (the Street
was built on the beach!).
At that time, when the flow
arrived, the water used to cover the beach partially.
All the section located around the Sapucaitava Hill, in
fact a rocky coast located between the place where the
Itanhaém Yacht Club is located nowadays and the beach,
was totally covered by the water, making it look like as
though there were 2 small beaches. All that bank seem to
have been a beach. Unfortunately, when the street was
built on the section of the beach located between the
Yacht Club and the Piragüíra Hill, that section vanished
forever and can only be seen on old pictures or as one
passing by Emídio de Souza Street, look down in the
water and notices the white sands on the bottom of the
river that was in fact, the part of the beach located
under the water.
Even nowadays, when the
flow arrives, it covers the beach partially. There are
very beautiful views of the river, the estuary and and
of the city. Impressive views of the Carioca's Rock and the
rocky coast of the Sapucaitava Hill. This beach is
indicated for the ones who love fishing or bathing in
the river (warning: there can be strong currents so
people swimming there must be aware of this). You can go
to this beach by boat, or even on foot since there's a
path behind the Yacht Club at the foot of Sapucativa
Hill. On the top of the hill there's a belvedere with
terrific views southwards towards the Fishermen's Beach,
The Givurá Island and the Dream Beach. Birds from the
Atlantic Forest all over the place, promote a particular
spectacle, singing and showing their colorful feathers.
