That's a very traditional beach as
everyone knows its location since it is also a surfing
point. It kept the secluded atmosphere with all its
beauties. Both extremities of the beach present
distinguished features. One of them is the back of the Sapucaitava Hill and its rocky coast, showing
small bushes bent over the opposite direction of the sea
winds; the other one is the Givurá Island and one more
rocky coastline that leads to the Dream Beach. There are
beautiful mansions across from the beach and the
Fishermen's Market (that names the beach).
The market is a meeting
point, where the fhisermen sell everyday their harvest such as
crabs, octopus, shellfish, fresh fish, oysters from the Cananéia Region and shrimp. Visitors can be delighted by
local recipes such as Moqueca (Brazilian Fish Stew) and the
Caiçara Seafood prepared at the restaurants nearby. On
the right side of the beach there's a passage to the
Dream Beach from where the set of the
Paranambuco Hills as well as the Juréia Mountain Range
located southwards can be seen. The section of the city, located
behind the beach has recently received new inhabitants,
in fact, families arrived from the Capital of São Paulo,
that have found and crated new jobs in the city.
The beach was also the
scenery for Ivani Ribeiro's Soap Opera (Novela) Women of
Sand (Mulheres de Areia - note: in fact, novela in
Brazil is much more elaborated than an ordinary North American
Soap Opera) in the first half of the 70's (1973/1974).
It was a mega hit at that time, airing at Channel
4, the extinct Tupi Television Network from São Paulo.
The Soap Opera featured many stars as Eva Vilma, Carlos Zara, Cleide Iáconis
and Gianfrancesco
Guarnieri who played the role of a retarded man named Tonho da Lua.
Many people came to watch the recordings at that time
with great interest. Tonho da Lua's house, located at
the foot of the Sapucaitava Hill was demolished, but the
foundations are still there. One of the actors, Serafim Gonzáles (acting today at Globo Network), who is
also a sculptor, has donated a statue that is currently
located at the right side of the beach, making everyone
remember the events that took place there in the 70's,
bringing back those very nice years. The Globo
TV Netwrok recorded a new version of the soap opera in
1993, in the State of Rio de Janeiro, around Tarituba Beach
in northern Paraty.
